Dorm Information

Check-in

Dorm check-in will take place at Stonier Hall dormitory (location [1] on the workshop map) from 5:00-9:00pm on Thursday May 27.

If you are arriving by car (see the driving directions), you can park temporarily (~30 minutes) in Lot 35 immediately adjacent to Stonier Hall. Please be sure to note your license plate number, as you will need this information at check-in.

At check-in you will receive:

(IMPORTANT: All of the above items need to be returned when you check out!) In addition, you will receive miscellaneous safety information, maps, restaurant lists, etc. You will also receive a yellow parking hang-tag that you can use if you have a car.

The room will be made up with linens and towels. However, there will be no housekeeping service during your stay, and linens and towels will not normally be changed during your stay.

Except for the brief check-in period, dorm parking is in the Parking Deck (location [PD] on the workshop map). From Lot 35, turn right onto College Ave., and then take your first right onto Senior Street. The entrance to the Parking Deck is at the end of Senior Street. Hang the yellow hang-tag in your car when you leave it.

The dorm check-in is NOT the same as the on-site conference registration. Proceed to the Reception (6-9pm) to register, or else register Thursday morning before the scientific session begins in Voorhees Hall.

Roommate assignments

To check your roommate assignment, see the roommate and phone list.

Phone and internet access

Every dorm room will have an active phone jack, but no phone or phone cord is provided. Thus, if you would like to have phone access in your room, please simply bring a phone with a phone cord that can be plugged into the jack. Anyone can call in. Outgoing calls are limited to a local area, but you can reach 800 numbers to make long-distance calls if you have any kind of phone card. Your phone number is listed at roommate and phone list.

Broadband internet access will also be available in the dorm rooms. You will be given a static IP address and the basic information (subnet mask, gateway, DNS servers) needed to set up a static connection (sorry, no DHCP). Bring your own ethernet cable. Please be aware that Computing Services monitors network activity for signs of viruses etc., and reserves the right to terminate connections in such cases.

Late arrival or early departure

If you arrive at the dorm after 9pm on Thursday evening, and find that the dorm check-in is no longer taking place, use the phone outside the dorm front door to call extension 3-7960. This will be the dorm room of one of our postdocs who will be staying in the dorm to make sure things run smoothly. This person should be able to give you your key and get you settled. If you definitely expect to arrive after 9pm, please let us know in advance.

If you are not planning to spend the first night in the dorm, please pick up your dorm materials when you register at the Voorhees Hall.

If you need to leave before the dorm check-out period (12:45-2:15pm on Sunday), please BE SURE to give your key, access card, and meal card to one of the organizers before leaving.

Dorm safety

Please take seriously the safety warnings included in your check-in packet. In addition to safety considerations for all workshop participants detailed at the end of the next section, it is particularly important that residents DO NOT prop dorm doors open.

General Information

Reception

The reception will take place from 6:00-9:00pm on Thursday May 27 at the Zimmerli Art Museum (location [3] on the workshop map). Feel free to "drop in" for as much or as little of this time as you wish. Drinks and appetizers will be served.

The reception is easy walking distance from the dorm and from the Hyatt, but if you prefer to drive, you can park in Lot 1 (location [P1] on the workshop map; access is from the corner of Somerset and George) or Lot 16 (entrance from George St. between Seminary and Hamilton). You can also park in the metered parking spaces on Hamilton Street between College and George, or on Seminary Place, but note that the meters are in force until 8pm.

On-site conference registration

All participants must have pre-registered. On-site registration will take place at the Zimmerli Art Museum (location [3] on the workshop map) during the time of the reception (6:00-9:00pm Thursday), and then at a desk in the lobby of Voorhees Hall (same location [3]) starting at 8:15am Friday morning.

You will receive

(Lunch tickets will be given to "local" registrants only, since those staying in the dorm will be able to use their meal cards.) Invited speakers who have not yet paid the $25 banquet co-payment should be prepared to take care of this at registration.

Safety

The Rutgers College Avenue Campus does have a crime problem, as is the case for most urban campuses. Avoid walking alone, especially at night. Use common sense.
